Environment Concepts

Concept art for my personal game project Under the Stairs, the background is China in the 1980s, a poor, traditional little town. There are two worlds in the game, one is the normal world with realistic colors and gives off a peaceful vibe, while the other one is chaos world that has high-pitched colors and looks surreal. This part is the normal world.

The chaos world for Under the Stairs and game title scene, end scene. I use the crayon brush to set a different tone for making phantoms.
The two worlds are used to represent two mental statuses of a queer girl who's suffering from homophobia and bullying circumstances.

The environment concept art I made is based on the novel Mōryō no Hako by Natsuhiko Kyogoku. It is a thrilling story that uses boxes as a metaphor to describe how reserved and close-up everybody's heart is. The story happened in 20th-century, Japan, so I made the vibe ominous, mysterious, and retro.
Characters
Chaos world character concepts for Under the Stairs. These 4 monsters represent different negative influences on the protagonist. Their images inspiration is from The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud.

Character design for the novel Mōryō no Hako -- the doll, the bishop, and the butcher. They are all a part of a box cult using masks to cover their real face and stay mysterious.
